My Year, 2020
2020
thesis 3D animation project at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)
“My Year, 2020” is a film about how the pandemic declaration impacted my life in 2020. I decided to work on this project after hearing about how many people are struggling with boredom, loneliness, and lack of motivation during the time of self-quarantine. Since I have been going through similar challenges, I thought it would be interesting to create an animation about pandemic life. I focused on capturing how a character dreamt of making 2020 the best year, but that dream was crushed as of March 11th, 2020, when the pandemic was declared. The animation depicts many relatable scenes, such as the character being surprised by the pandemic declaration, struggling to work, and desiring freedom. This animation is mostly created in 3D using low poly modelings and simple textures. Color is used as a symbol in this animation, as the existence of colors indicates the character’s happy mood. Scenes before the declaration of the pandemic are in color to signify the liveliness of the character, and the scenes after the declaration are in black and white to emphasize the character’s monotonous and struggle-filled life. As I wanted to create a rather universal and comforting animation, the ending portrays the character dreaming of having a regular life, to which people these days wish to return.
